The ornate lamp standards on Beach Crescent are in very poor state. We have sourced some money to restore some of these lamp standards to their former condition. This work should be starting soon.

Fishermans' graveyard

Broughty Ferry’s origins were the fisher folk and their heritage can be seen in the historic cottages on the seafront. Their graveyard at the bottom of Church Street is hidden and few people are aware that it even exists. It tells the story of the fisherfolk and their difficult lives in graphic detail. We think there is an opportunity to promote this heritage and feature the graveyard as part of it. If you agree please become a member and help us to highlight Broughty Ferry’s proud heritage and attract visitors to Broughty Ferry.

We have recently obtained £10,000 in funds from the Dundee Historic Environmental Trust which will see us begin work on the graveyard to effect minor repairs to some of the stonework, provide more suitable gates and install two story boards – one inside and one outside the graveyard.

We hope to continue with a further community based project based on the Graveyard and involving Grove Academy pupils.

Eco Building

The former bathing shelter was an eysore and a blight on Broughty Ferry’s Beach. It was also been the focus of attention from private developers who would like to put wholly inappropriate and private concerns on what the many feel should be an area put aside for the use of the public.

The Trust has proposed a new building (see Castle Green Project) which Dundee City Council has agreed should be the template for the sort of thing that should be on our very special beach. As part of this agreement we are delighted to report Dundee City Council, thanks in no small part to our campaign, has demolished the eysore bathing shelter. Hurrah!

Barometer Cottage

Barometer Cottage.

Barometer cottage is one of Broughty Ferry’s best loved buildings. It had fallen into a sad state of disrepair. The Trust wanted to see this building restored to its former glory as one of the main buildings on the seafront.

Architects Ritchie Dagen & Allan have undertaken works to restore the cottage, which include plans to restore a barometer. The Trust is happy to report that work is finished and it is hoped that the cottage will be available to rent as a holiday home.
